Volunteers Needed Lincoln officially issues a proclamation asking for 75,000 volunteers. North Carolina and Kentucky quickly refuse. North Carolina troops seize Fort Macon at the entrance to the harbor at Moorhead City. Much excitement is caused in the remaining slave states that have not seceded.
