| Virginia Votes to Secede The Virginia secession convention meeting in Richmond votes to secede by a vote of 88 to 55. A popular referendum will be held on May 23 to have the people of Virginia formally vote on secession. The convention also calls for the governor to call on the militia to protect the state from any federal act of coercion. Missouri and Tennessee refuse to furnish their quotas of volunteers to help put down the rebellion. The Federal government continues to land troops at Fort Pickens in Pensacola harbor. |
