Events in Indian Territory

Colonel William H. Emory abandons Fort Washita in the Indian
Territory. This leaves the Five Civilized tribes to the influence of
the confederate government. The Cherokees, Chickasaws,
Choctaws, Creeks, and Seminoles have slaveholders among
them and some of them join the cause of the South. Stand
Watie, a Cherokee Indian, becomes a Confederate Brigadier
General, and is the last one fighting at the end of the war.
