| Activity Around Forts In Charleston, General Beauregard tell Major Robert Anderson that no further communication or traffic between the fort and the city will be allowed. From the vicinity of Fort Pickens the Confederate commander General Braxton Bragg sends a message to Confederate Secretary of War Leroy Pope Walker asking to open fire if Fort Pickens is reinforced. Walker replies from Montgomery Alabama on April 8th that Bragg should resist and to expect an attack on Pensacola. Navy Lieutenant John L. Worden leaves Washington for Fort Pickens with specific orders for the landing of troops at the fort. Former Congressman John Minor Botts of Virginia confers with Lincoln from 7 to 11 P.M. about problems and expedients to prevent Virginia from seceding. |
