Jefferson Hears of His Election Jefferson Davis, who is elected provisional President of the Confederacy, is not at the convention in Montgomery. He is at his plantation in Mississippi when he hears of the news. Davis, a West Point graduate, considers himself more of a military man and is reportedly stunned at learning he is President.
