Floyd Replaced

President Buchanan named Joseph Holt, formerly Postmaster
General, as Secretary of War. Holt replaced John Floyd, a
Virginian, who resigned under fire and was suspected of aiding
the South, as Secretary.

Union troops also garrison Fort Jefferson on the Dry Tortugas,
Fl., west of Key West. The fort will be used to imprison political
prisoners. The most famous probably being Dr. Mudd the
physician who attended John Wilkes Booth after Booth broke his
leg during the assassination of President Lincoln.
