Baltimore Police Official Arrested
On this day the authorities in the Union Army had the Baltimore
Marshal of Police and all of the Baltimore Police Commissioners
arrested and transported to the prison located at Fort Lafayette in
New York Harbor. Then, the commandant of Fort Lafayette
ignored the writ of habeas corpus issued by Brooklyn Judge,
Garrison, compelling the Union commandant to produce the
marshal and commissioners in court.
During this same approximate period of time, many Maryland state
assembly persons, a Maryland Congressman, as well as the
editors of both the Baltimore Exchange and of the South were
arrested in secret and imprisoned at Fort Warren in Boston,
Massachusett.
