Joseph E. Johnston withdraws troops from Harper's Ferry as
Federal troops advance.
Nathan Bedford Forrest enlists in the Confederate Army as a
private in a cavalry company called White's mounted rifles.
The first Flag Day celebration occurs in Hartford, Connecticut,
during the first summer of the Civil War. The flag continues to
have 33 stars, even though the southern states have seceded
from the Union.
