Actions In Tennessee
The convention of Eastern Tennesseans meeting in Greeneville
declares for the Union. On this day Tennessee become the first
of three Confederate states that authorizes free blacks to enlist in
state militia units. Tennessee authorizes the recruitment of state
militia units composed of "free persons of color" between the ages
of 15 and 50. In 1862, Louisiana will assemble the all-black 1st
Louisiana Native Guard, and Alabama authorizes the enlistment of
creoles for a state militia unit in Mobile.
