Stephen Douglas Dies

Stephen Douglas the "Little Giant" dies in Chicago. He is
forty-eight years old. It is believed that he died of Typhoid Fever.
He has had a difficult time of it lately. He had financial difficulties,
he had been depressed by the war he had sought to prevent, and
he had long and difficult campaigns. Throughout it all he was a
supporter of the Union. He last words to his two son was "Tell
them to obey the laws and support the Constitution of the United
States".

In Western Virginia there is a battle in Phiippi. The Union force
advance through the mountains and fall on Confederate forces at
Philippi. The Confederates break and run and the battle becomes
known as the "Philippi Races".
