| Wise Commands in Western Virginia Confederate Brigadier General Henry A. Wise, former Governor of Virginia, is ordered to take over command in Western Virginia. Specifically in the Kanawha Valley area of Western Virginia. Many of the counties of Western Virginia are loyal to the Union. The Federal Cabinet decides that the expenses of the war will be paid by the Federal Government. It will pay for expenses once the states have mobilized volunteers. In South Carolina the 3rd South Carolina Regiment is mustered into service. The regiment will fight through many major battles in the war and surrender with Johnston at Bennet House near Durham. Richard Selden Garnett was made a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army on this date. He will be the first General on either side to be killed in the war. |
