Federal troops under General Benjamin Butler moved out of
Newport News, Virginia, Hampton, Virginia, and Fortress Monroe
towards Confederate positions at Little and Big Bethel, also know
as Bethel Church, Virginia. Several times on the night march the
inexperienced Federal troops fired on their own men by mistake.
