| Funeral for Ellsworth Funeral services were held in the East Room of the White House for Colonel Elmer Ellsworth. The President and Mrs. Lincoln were present. The President wrote the parents of young Ellsworth, "So much of promised usefulness to one's country, ad of bright hopes for one's self and friends, have rarely been so suddenly dashed, as in his fall." Death in war was yet new--soon it would receive less attention. |
