| McClellan Protects Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Major General George B. McClellan, from Cincinnati , ordered three Federal columns into Western Virginia to protect the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and to aid the pro-unionist in the area. The main drive is towards Grafton, Virginia. Forces of Colonel B.F. Kelly occupied Grafton on May 30, after a successful march across the Ohio. Postmaster General Montgomery Blair announces that postal service to the South will end on May 31st. Federal blockades are set up on Mobile, Alabama by the U.S.S. Powhatan and on New Orleans, Louisiana by the U.S.S. Brooklyn. |
