President Lincoln order Colonel Robert Anderson, late of Fort
Sumter, to recruit troops from Kentucky and Western Virgina. He
also reviews Elmer Ellsworh's New York Brigade of Fire Zouaves.
A Zouave has a uniform modeled after those of the French
Colonial Armies. It was a gaudy uniform with baggy pants, a short
jacket, and a fez. The Zouaves were also famous for the ability to
fire and reload a musket from a prone position.
