Naval Academy Moved

The United States Naval Academy, founded at Annapolis,
Maryland in 1845, is moved to Newport, Rhode Island because of
hostilities with the South. The U.S.S. Constitution,
"Old Ironsides"
arrives in Newport on this day and the Naval Academy is
established here. It was thought safer to move the school to
Newport than leave it in Maryland. A number of officers of the
Navy have left for the South.
